I found this important. Especially the word "speedpainting" is used in so many different contexts I don't think some people know what it means anymore. :'D

Speed painting: (From Wikipedia) Speed painting is an artistic technique where the artist has a limited time to finish the work. The time can vary, usually a duration is set from several minutes to a few hours.
In other words: Speed painting is always done on one sitting and the process never includes sketching or lineart. An art process video can be of a speed painting but the video itself is not called a speed painting.
Example of a speed painting:  Landscape with Pyramids by merl1ncz

Time-lapse: (From Cambridge Dictionary) Time-lapse is a way of filming something in which many photographs are taken over a long period of time and are shown quickly in a series so that a slow action appears to happen quickly.
In other words: A sped-up video of someone making art is called a time-lapse. If the video is not sped-up, it is not a time-lapse.
Example of a time-lapse: White Flowers Bouquet by webang111

Livestream: (From Collins English Dictionary) Livestream means to broadcast (an event) on the internet as it happens.
In other words: Livestreaming, or sometimes just called “streaming”, means the artist is working right at that moment and letting people online see the work process. A video made of the livestream is no longer called a livestream because it is not happening at that moment.
Example of art livestreaming: picarto.tv/
Okay so I'm still in Canada (going back to Finland next Friday) and my husband's computer/photoshop/monitor is messing with me.

I just finished an artwork I would love to upload, but after saving it doesn't look the same as on Ps. The colors turn darker and more saturated, ruining the picture. And before you start going "uncheck Convert to sRGB" or "assign the RGB color profile" you should know it's not just Photoshop - same thing happens when I save the image on SAI or even on MS-Paint. On windows preview and when uploaded the picture is oversaturated and darker (not by much but it makes a big difference in this artwork) but when I open the same image on any program on this cursed computer it looks what it's supposed to. Screenshotting the ruined version doesn't work as all the editing programs see the pic like nothing ever went wrong in the first place.

I've tried to look for a solution but I got nothing. I tried every trick I could find online, changed color profiles and re-calibrated the monitor's colors - EVERYTHING. I'm at a loss.
I mean I can just upload my artwork when I get back home to my own functional computer which doesn't ruin the colors, but since my husband also works on photoshop sometimes I wish to fix this issue.

The weirdest thing must be that the image preview app shows the colors wrong but the image preview you can have on when going through folders shows them correctly. o_0
Gods, Universe and Religion by Skudde-OCs

Those of you who have shown interest towards my worldbuilding and OCs might want to check out this writing I published on my secondary account.
It may seem a bit long but I'd really want people to read it (hence why I feature it here. my oc-account doesn't have a lot of followers in the end) and I wholeheartedly request comments on it. Especially questions. I'm always happy to answer questions about my work as sometimes it can make me think of an angle I would have never discovered on my own.
Oh wow dA is already 15? I could swear it turned 10 just a year ago... :D
  1. How long have you been on DeviantArt?
Almost 8 years now. I first joined just to fave some Dragonball Z fanart (not even kidding) so the first year I didn't upload anything. When I finally started to I have been more or less active all the time.

  2. What does your username mean?
An Estonian breed of sheep is apparently also called "skudde" but my nickname is not related to it. :D It was a word my older brothers used to tease me with as a kid, claiming it was a foreign word and my grand quest was to find out what it means. Eventually I found out it means nothing, but I started using it as my artist name in 2007.

  3. Describe yourself in three words.
As an artist I'm systematic, critical and moody.
I tend to do things in a certain way, or at least organize what I'm doing into clear phases. Sketch, lineart, base colors, background, shading... Sometimes it could be good to let myself wander a bit.
I'm also my worst critic, always pointing out in my head if something isn't the maximum perfect.
And I'm moody. I can go from "I can't draw shit ewhh" to "I CAN DO ANYTHIIINGGG" and back in an hour. My drawing is sometimes really slow because my motivation goes up and down like a rollercoaster.

  4. Are you left or right handed?
Right handed. I can't even brush my teeth with my left hand.

  5. What was your first deviation?
It's...uhh...this horrible thing: Untitled-1 by Skudde

  6. What is your favourite type of art to create?
    OC DESIGNS! MAPS! YAY!

  7. If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?
Oh gods of art teach me the skill of shading with black. (aka. the "marvel comics" shading style)

  8. What was your first favourite?
Probably some DBZ fanart I mentioned above.

  9. What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?
I fave all kinds of stuff really. Digital, traditional, photography, comics, animation, writing... Anything that makes me go "wow".

  10. Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?
HMM. I can't really pick an absolute favourite, but I like arvalis and yuumei a lot. I prefer artists who are also characters behind their work, not just faceless goons who make pretty pictures.

  11. If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?
I would gladly meet W0LLE if I'd get to meet all his bird subjects too. :D

  12. How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?
Waittiz has motivated me to draw birds since 2008. That's a lot I think.

  13. What are your preferred tools to create art?
Digitally I like what I'm using - SAI and Photoshop combined - and traditionally black liner and watercolors are high up there.

  14. What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?
I get the best ideas when I'm out cycling. I come back home and only then I know whether that idea was good or not - if it still inspires me to start drawing said idea it was good. Another weird place is at work, where I sometimes have spare time to open my sketchbook.

  15. What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?
I remember when I used to have a few loyal watchers who regularly wrote comments on my art. Favourites don't mean much to me, but I appreciate thoughtful comments a lot. It was nice to upload art knowing there would be people who have valuable words to give back. It could be because of my inactivity, but lately uploading art hasn't felt like sharing it with caring group of people but more like showing it to strangers, waiting for someone to pay attention.
Wat by Skudde

Featured window shows all content, but my gallery showed nothing but my ID in it. Sta.sh was empty as well, but in a couple of minutes everything went back to normal. Aaaaand then back again after 10 minutes or so. Get your shit together dA!
Has anyone else ever faced this? Scared the living hell out of me. "SOME HACKERS GOT MY DA OH NOES" Heheh. I think it's just some stupid issue again.

In other news, I realized I've been talking about my wing tutorial for well over a year now. It is coming I swear! It's the fact-checking for it that's taking a while, because there's really no encyclopedia of wing anatomy for artists. I need to be sure that what I'm going to write isn't just some nonsense. :D And I have to be able to draw it all!
Now that the large commission that's been slowing me down is done I can perhaps focus on redesigning some of my OCs (OC renovations are still going) and making new content here. Mental issues have been dragging my motivation but there is one...ehh...biiird I've been working on. ::'D I want to draw other stuff ok but this thing just has to be a bird. Sorry folks, maybe next time. :') This one should be a bit different anyway since I'm trying out a new technique and ooh, maybe I'll make a proper background too!

I hope you guys are having a nice summer!
There is a high chance I need to put the project on hiatus for a while.
I've been doing tons of research lately (mostly on feathers themselves, other things I have covered somewhat thoroughly) and broadening my vocabulary on feathered wings. The amount of stuff I've learned by self-studying is incredible, and when I compare it to what I used to know I'm in completely different league now. But it remains to be extremely frustrating, time-consuming and tiring that every couple of weeks I find someting new.
Oh those overlap like that!
...but only on larger birds, I see.
Just a small example of the complexity. I find a new "rule", and soon discover it doesn't apply to all birds at all. Or I find a rule, write it out, and then scrap it all because there was more to it than that. There's also a lot of misinformation in the internet (what are scapulars - where are axillaries - some sources don't even acknowledge the existence of propatagium) so I've been swimming around in it and looking for the correct sources.
I want to be able to make a tutorial that is all you need. I want it to be about basics, but in an all-inclusive way. And not too scientific - we're artists here and not scientists.

So that said, you must understand that it's a lot of work. I just recently got commissioned a LARGE painting, and since I'm a poor artist in need of money I'll be working on it for quite a portion of my time. Then there's my league running business, youtube video-making life and unfinished character sketches for my oc-account. In a couple of weeks my love and I will be reunited after 5 months of separation, and a week after that I need to start applying to schools and focus on pre-assignments. All while I'm desperately looking for a job.

So let's just say I'm trying to avoid burning out. :') The wing tutorial WILL come, but it has become a lot bigger project than I knew to expect. At least it'll be all worth it when it's done.
...who has seen enough character sheets of winged characters with no picture of the wings actually being attached to the rest of the creature?
I mean no offense to any artist particular. I have just noticed that especially with dragon OCs there has been this trend that the sheet has a full body picture of the dragon without wings and then the wings seperately in a different picture. Most often the full body has no indication where the wings would attach themselves (to the shoulder? to the shoulder blades? in front of the front legs or behind them?) and how big they would be in comparison to the rest of the body. It gets even more confusing with membrane wings, because it's important to know how far the membrane stretches along the body. Does it stop impractically mid-back, go past the hips or continue along the tail?
Sometimes the ref sheet is the only time the artist has drawn said character, so if you were to draw a picture of them you would be the first one ever to draw the character as a whole.
And that's just sad.

What do you guys think? Do you think there is a reason the wings are ripped off the body, a benefit to the artist or the viewer?

I see it as a sign of laziness. If the wings are somehow in the way of other features the character has, then the artist should draw two pictures. If the wings somehow screw up the composition of the sheet, then the artist should design the composition more suitable for a winged character.
Heck, the wings wouldn't even have to be missing entirely. There could be a shadow/silhouette of them on the other side of the character to at least give an idea how big they would be and how they would attach. They could be folded. Though I guess folded wings are just soooo difficult they can't be drawn to the sheet.

I'm too passionate about wings to not be passive aggressive about this apparently. :'D
  • Listening to: My brains ranting
  • Watching: Detached wings on ref sheets
Some of you have probably been looking forward to the wing tutorial I was talking about some time ago. YES I'm still going to do something about it. I've been doing research on the matter and oh god. Oh MY god. Oh god...
This thing is so apparent, so obvious, so visible that I feel huge shame for not realizing it years ago. It's also something that a couple of wing tutorials I've seen before have mentioned, but I've managed to ignore it. (huge majority of tutorials ignore it too though)
Just looking at the fact I have ignored for this long makes me feel like I don't have the right to draw wings at all, not to mention teach all of you to draw them with my limited knowledge and understanding of them. I mean just how COMPLEX, DIVERSE and close to PERFECTION can bird wings be?? They are amazing, incredible things.

This said, I can assure you the tutorial will be quite big with lots of birds. :la:

Tänä vuonna pistetään synkkistelijöille joulu pystyyn!

1. S'ther
Dark and Devious by Skudde Landing by Skudde

2. Janakurael eli JK
Unpredictably Evil by Skudde Don't Mind Me by Skudde-OCsJK gryph by Skudde-OCs (ihmis- tai griippimuoto, saat ihan valita)

3. Haado - Todellista haastetta haluaville
Time and Time Again by Skudde-OCsHappy Birthday Haado! by Skudde-OCs
Zombi-arakne Haado on viettänyt vähän liian kauan kosteassa ja pimeässä luolassaan ypöyksin. Tuskin neiti edes tietää miten joulua tulisi viettää. Paniikkikohtaus hänelle varmaan iskisi jos päätyisi keskelle värikkäitä joulupalloja - muusta tilpehööristä puhumattakaan - mutta siedätyshoito on tunnetusti paras hoito! Haadon saa laittaa minkälaiseen jouluskeemaan tahansa, sillä varmaan rauhallisella talvitaivaalla leiskuvat revontuletkin aiheuttaisivat raukalle sydäninfarktin.
...and I realized I've been drawing them wrong my whole life. All the reference I have clearly shows the same thing but I've been blind to it until today.
It's too much. Additional to another thing I found out a few months ago, this makes me want to educate people even more. Another tutorial incoming.

Ps. I feel completely stupid, yet enlightened.

The upper side of the wing is the "wrong side".

UPDATE:
I'm going to make this thing into a larger tutorial, so it may take some while. I hope to get the tutorial to cover my whole knowledge of wings. ...or at least the important information of them. :D Let's ignore the "hey these two species can be told apart by the number of primaries they have!" -stuff that probably isn't as relevant.
In Finnish only:

Heippatirallaa kaikki!

Yup, this babe is leaving to Toronto tomorrow aND YOU CAN'T STOP ME. :la:
I don't feel like apologizing with phrases like "I'll be inactive for two weeks" because I haven't been very active lately anyway. I'm not drawing as much as I could because I've been focusing on other aspects of my life, which has been a refreshing experience. After my trip I'm going to work for a couple of months and what usually happens is that I a) get insanely inspired to do everything else, especially digital art, but b) I have very little time to do anything else. We'll see if I get producive.

In other news: After five years struggling with my computer and its crappy graphics card, I got a new pc as a birthday present from my family. And deary me is this machine a BEAST! Photoshop and SAI run so smoothly I could just pick a 2500px smudging brush and play with it for the rest of my life. I gained some motivation for art as well when I started testing the capabilities of this monster. :D

That pretty much sums up what's going on. I bid all my watchers a happy and refreshing summer! :)
Waittiz made one so why wouldn't I?
(My watcher count says 498 but I swear it was 499 yesterday and I recieved one more watcher today so 500 it is. Sayonara to those two who left or got their accounts deleted.)

So! To celebrate my 6 years long journey here in dA and the popularity I've gained I decided to give something to my dear watchers. (and something for me to draw instead of agonizing over not being able to decide some things concerning my personal projects) Free requests it is!

:star:How to participate::star:
  • Write a comment below and attach 2-4 character pictures/refs/names to it. If you win, I'll choose one of the attached characters and draw a picture of it. (lineart, colored, big or small; I haven't decided yet) The characters can be yours or your friend's or from a series/movie/game etc. I don't care as long as there's a reference picture I can use. (text based refs are a no-no)
  • You have to be watching me to participate, but don't start to watch me just to participate. I don't need any more watchers that aren't actually interested in what I do, so neither will I draw free art for people who'd start watching me just for that.
  • After you comment, I'll give you a number which will be used when I draw the slots.
  • There will be 2 victors, meaning that I'll be drawing two pictures.
The raffle ends 28.2. (2/28 for the american folk) and I'll draw the pictures before revealing which two people won the raffle. (everybody loves surprises, right?~) The pictures will be uploaded in March.

~ ~ ~ ~
UPDATE: The slots have been drawn and participation is now closed. Thanks to all who entered! Winners will be informed when the drawings are finished. :D

UPDATE2: Winners are :iconankaiith: and :iconkarmic-jinx:! Congratulations!

Since I know most of you haven't recently (or ever) visited my texture/resource account, I'll just have to feature some of my own photography here. You leave me no choice, guys.

I point out once more that my resources are free to use and you don't need to give me the credit to use them. Just go on.
I do like to see what people use them for, but it's not necessary to show me your artwork or whatever you get out of them.

"It's been three days since I lost my internet connection. A thunderstorm broke the ADSL and replacing it with a new one didn't give any results. Still no signal. Trying to create a connection only gives me an error code. At first I thought I could check what that code meant, but then I was crushed by the fact that I can't check it anywhere without the internet.
Questions have tormented me during these long hours: What's happening on Tumblr now? Has anyone given me faves or watches in dA? Have I recieved email? Has some circles published new albums? Any new pages on my favourite webcomics? Is my comission ready yet?
My friends must think I'm dead. It's only a matter of time when they start giving me stressed phone calls to check if I'm in a hospital or something like that. I just wish the library was still open when I get out of work.

Last night I dreamt of having an internet connection. Laggy, but a connection anyway. It was awesome and it made me think if I truly even remember what it's like to surf like there's no tomorrow.

IT'S BEEN HELL I TELL YOU. And FINALLY I got my ADSL fixed, thank god. And just like I expected:
Tumblr had exploded.
I had recieved some faves and a new watcher.
No email, as always.
A couple of new albums and lots of tasty new music onto my playlist.
New page on tuesday and wednesday of two comics.
AND THE COMISSION IS READY AND I LOVE IT.
JUST LOOK AT IT.
